Which do you choose to treat yourself when sick? Food or medication? I look forward to the day when our kitchens replace our pharmacies and we become less reliant on meds like antibiotics and more reliant on immunity boosting foods instead. Food can be our medicine.
Antibiotics, designed to either kill bacteria or stop them from spreading, cannot differentiate between the “bad” bacteria that may be causing an infection and the “good” bacteria that belong in your gut. Instead, they destroy so much of what is in our second brain aka the gut. Who wants that? I don’t…
70% of our immune system runs from the gut, so choosing fermented foods to boost our health can mean better digestion of food/nutrients as well as the growth of good bacteria in our tummies. Some popular fermented choices are items like yogurt, kimchi, kefir, sauerkraut, apple cider vinegar, komucha, tempeh, and pickles. The maintenance of our bacteria is extremely important to our health and well-being.
So with my annoyingly sniffy nose and scratchy throat symptoms this week, here is what I’m eating to boost my immunity (no antibiotics for me). My food immunity bowl includes:
1. kimchi (fermented)
2. tempeh (fermented)
3. brown rice (zinc power)
4. 8 oz of kombucha (fermented)
