All this talk about National Pizza Day… I just couldn’t help myself.
Add on that’s it’s the month of love AND Oscar Sunday (where I love to indulge while watching the big wins). Sometimes the potential tummy ache is worth it. What are some of your favorite indulgences?
Many of you reading this are probably scratching your head in confusion, wondering how and why a personal trainer and nutrition coach could eat pizza, even if it is National Pizza Day (which by the way, I eat occasionally and regardless of this made-up holiday). It’s often labeled on the “bad list” which depending on the circumstance can be true.
When visiting the idea of balance and portion control, that could put pizza in the “ok” pile at times. I often encourage clients to create a set of 4 boxes where they can list what’s known to them to be the healthiest, moderately healthy, not that healthy, and a hard no.
For those of us in the general population with no particular health issues (diabetes, celiac, heart disease, IBS, etc), the occasional indulgence is ok. In fact, I encourage it. Why? Because balance is the key to living a healthy and less stressful life. Stress is counting every calorie we consume everyday. Stress is beating ourselves up because we went to a birthday party and enjoyed a slice of cake.
Are you following where I’m going with this? There is nutrition science and there’s a nutrition belief. It’s ok to be curious about what and why a food has a particular effect on us. Do your research, even with the thousands of articles out there. Journal how a good choice makes you feel physically after eating it. Hire a nutrition coaching to take you through some healthier habits you can set for yourself. But to altogether cut out a particular food group because the belief system you’ve seen in the media deems it “bad”, is that fair to you? Probably not.
Balance out the good with the “not so bad” and go from there. I think you’ll find freedom in this and be a heck of a lot happier. With that said… I’m about to dig into my pizza (a slice or two) and enjoy myself, because it’s National Pizza Day!
Xoxo, Natasha
