Make your kitchen a healthier place. I will show you how.
I have a confession for you guys. My kitchen wasn’t bringing me joy this month. I had many snacks hanging out that brought on a few extra pounds. I will share with you what I am doing now so that you too can make your kitchen a healthier place.
It all started with me re-reading Marie Kondo’s book “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up”. This time we all have at home right now is so valuable and precious. I really wanted to make the best of it by being productive and getting more organized. I started with my closets and storage. Wow what a feeling a lightness that followed from doing that cleansing. It also got me thinking of what other room in my apartment could use some tidying up?
The kitchen quickly came to mind. I was contemplating doing a quick once-over of it and letting it be. I only recently moved into this new apartment and all the appliances are new as are most of my silverware, dishes, and other useful tools. Not much needed to change. When I opened my cabinets though, I was filled with a bit of exasperation and shame. Ritz Crackers were quickly popping out at me; sugar-laden peanut butter Skippy was in close proximity too. Should I mention the family of cereal boxes? Ah, nevermind!
I thought of my snacking and recent weight-gain in that moment. That was not bringing me joy, not at all. I became determined to make my kitchen the healthy place it used to be, before food overstocking out of pandemic fear. For the first time in my life, I had more boxed goods and non-perishable items (is that really “food”?), than I had of the good stuff, the perishable items like produce, high quality dairy and fish.
My new mission was clear: do a food makeover in my kitchen. This motto became clear to me- A healthy kitchen = a healthy body. Cut out the clutter, clear the crap, overload my refrigerator with healthier choices. You want to make your kitchen a healthier place also? Here are the rules:
- Keep the healthier items easily accessible. Now when I feel like snacking, what is closest in my reach are things like organic apple sauce cups, fresh berries, even a slice of fresh sourdough bread. Stock your refrigerator with leafy greens, fresh fruit, organic grass-fed dairy, pasture-raised eggs, etc.
- Keep the less healthy items out of reach. Things like agave syrup, Ritz crackers, and that Skippy PB, are well out of reach now. I have to get a step stool to access them and usually that feels like too much effort so I move on and the craving goes away. See how easy this can be for you too?
- Keep consistent with the above rules, download my kitchen checklist, and everything else works out. I have already noticed my bloating has lessened, because my access to those salty, crunchy options is harder for me to get to.
I have a downloadable kitchen checklist for you that is very helpful. There is an initial pop-up when you first enter my website; there you will see my new pop-up for this Kitchen Assessment Guide. Add your email and the guide is sent directly to you!
Make your kitchen a healthier place. You will feel healthier overall.
XOXO, Natasha
